Higher education courses

Loans and grants

If you are from England and studying for your first degree or other higher education course you will  not have to pay your tuition fees upfront because loans are available from the government. You will also get support towards your living costs. Tuition fee loans are available to all full-time and part-time higher education students. The loan goes directly to paying for your course fees and you don't start paying it back until you're earning £21,000 a year. Read this Student Finance England leaflet (PDF 409KB) for more information about repayments. Read more about repayments at the Student Loans Company website.

Your entitlement to loans and grants depends on whether you are doing studying full-time or part-time.

Disabled Students Allowance

Students who incur extra costs as a result of undertaking a higher education course and as a direct result of a disability or specific learning difficulty may be eligible to apply for support in the form of Disabled Students' Allowance. This allowance can support things like additional travel costs, academic assistance, and specialist equipment.

These videos from Student Finance England will tell you more.

Access to Learning Fund

This fund offers additional non-repayable support, subject to eligibillity, to support students facing financial hardship, including:

  • Students with children
  • Students with adult dependants
  • Full and part-time higher education students
