Pupils build on Diploma knowledge

20/03/2009 10:51 - Return to press releases

Pupils from Bridlington School Sports College and Headlands School and Community Science College took part in a special event aimed at introducing them to the new Construction and the Built Environment Diploma.
The youngsters were invited to a taster event at Bridlington School to help them find out about the new 14 to 19 Construction and the Built Environment Diploma, which is being introduced nationally from September 2009.
Pupils took part in an activity to design and plan a housing estate and also heard from Clare Ogley and Claire Scott from Wates Construction about their role in the design and build of East Riding College's new campus in St Mary's Walk, Bridlington.
The College is the lead partner and is sharing the delivery of the Diploma with Beverley Grammar School.

Diploma co-ordinator Karen Arundel, from East Riding College, is working with schools across the East Riding to prepare for the delivery of the Diplomas.
She said: "This was a really interesting event, which gave the pupils a taste of what this new qualification will be like.
"The feedback from them was really positive and they said they were excited at the prospect of taking up the Diploma from September."

From September, Diplomas in Construction and the Built Environment, Hair and Beauty and Business, Administration and Finance will be available to pupils in the East Riding.
East Riding College is also leading on Hospitality and Catering, Society, Health and Development and Travel and Tourism, to be introduced in 2010.
Karen said: "A lot of work is being done across the East Riding to inform young people and their parents about the new Diplomas as they are the most important new qualification since the introduction of the national curriculum."

The Diploma is a new qualification for 14 to 19-year-olds, giving students a mix of class work and hands-on experience.
By 2011, there will be 17 subjects to choose from, each at three levels - foundation, higher and advanced.
In the East Riding, schools and colleges are working together to prepare for the introduction of the Diplomas in the area.
Pupils will spend some of their time in their school and attend college at other times.
