MBE for long-serving college governor

A long-serving East Riding College governor has been awarded the MBE for services to further education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Alex Denholm, 83, of Walkington, was chosen for the honour after serving as a governor of East Riding College for 22 years, much of the time as vice chairman.
Mr Denholm said: “I was surprised and I feel proud for the College. I put a lot of work in for the College but I also got a lot out of it.
“It’s a sheer pleasure to be engaged with an educational establishment which has such an excellent reputation for taking learners and helping them to progress into gainful employment and higher education.”
He added: “I have been privileged to work with so many nice and talented people and met such a large number of wonderful students.
“I’m so proud that, having brought about a wonderful new campus in Bridlington in 2009, that we will also have a fantastic campus for Beverley from September.”

Principal Derek Branton said: “Alex has been a tireless advocate of further education and thoroughly deserves the MBE for the significant positive effect he has had on the lives of so many people of all ages.
“We are very fortunate to have benefitted from Alex’s keen insight and astute judgement for many years in which he has given up his own time for the good of individual learners and the further education sector both regionally and nationally.”
Having stepped down as a governor earlier this year, Mr Denholm continues his involvement with the College as a Fellow and having been co-opted onto the governors’ Audit Committee.
The College, which has campuses in Beverley and Bridlington, and a smaller site in Hull, has 18 governors who make decisions which determine its strategic direction and monitor its performance.
