East Riding College Governor

Added: 10/03/2015
Closing Date: 13/04/2015

Have you got what it takes to make a difference?

The Governing Body of East Riding College is seeking to recruit new members for August 2015.  We are looking for:

  • a strong background and experience in either Finance/Audit or the local authority and/or as a councillor;
  • interest in further education;
  • motivated individuals with time to commit;
  • experience and/or an appreciation of working strategically.

We would particularly welcome applications from currently under-represented groups on the Governing Body - women, young people, people with disabilities and people from ethnic minorities.

East Riding College is a successful further education college providing an exciting and varied range of learning opportunities for the diverse communities within the East Riding of Yorkshire.  Building on the excellent Ofsted report and subsequent award of Beacon College Status in 2011 the College has gone from strength to strength achieving numerous awards and accolades and further increasing student success rates and our range of activities.

In 2009, we saw the opening of a brand new campus in Bridlington, which won the prestigious title of 'Best Educational Building in Yorkshire' and work has begun on the exciting new Beverley campus at Flemingate, scheduled to open in September 2015.

As a governor your duties will include setting the College's strategic direction and priorities; approving the budget; and the employment of the Principal and Vice Principals.  You will attend and contribute to meetings of the Governing Body and committees and be a critical friend to and ambassador for the College.

Most governors attend around 14 meetings a year, alongside the opportunity to attend training/networking events and College events, for example, staff conferences, learner focus groups and award ceremonies.  Meetings are held first thing in the morning or in the evening, chiefly at our Beverley campus.  Being a College governor is a voluntary role, where you give of your time and experience to work with other like-minded people to benefit the development of the College and the local community.  Members are, however, encouraged to claim for travel and subsistence whilst on College business.  This voluntary role brings many rewards such as boardroom experience, working for the benefit of the community as well as being a positive step towards career development.

The College is committed to the promotion of equality of opportunity and diversity.  It is serious about its safeguarding of young people and any successful candidate will be subject to the relevant checks.

For an application form or more information please contact Joanne Mylrea, Secretary to the Corporation on (01482) 390709 or joanne.mylrea@eastridingcollege.ac.uk
