An Introduction to GCSE Maths and Biology

This is a 3 week course aimed at those wishing to study GCSE Biology and Maths but would like an introduction to the subjects.  The course aims to cover 4 of the assessed practicals and the maths skills required for GCSE Biology.  Students could attend these sessions to explore possibilities for further study in maths and science within the college. This will be a hands-on course that will give a practical insight into further study, in a supportive and fun way.

This course will be run 2-4:30pm Wednesday 27th July, Wednesday 3rd August and Wednesday 10th August, Course Code PF374/1

What will I study?

Week 1

  • Introduction to terminology
  • Anomalous results/outliers
  • Experiment- Reaction times
  • Mean, median, mode and range
  • How to draw a table
  • How to plot a bar chart

Week 2

  • Naming and using equipment
  • Identifying anomalies
  • Experiment- Potatoes and Osmosis
  • Working with data
  • Percentage change
  • How to plot a line graph

Week 3

  • Using a microscope
  • Experiment -Looking at your own cells
  • Experiment- Heart rate experiment
  • Calculating magnification
  • Converting units

How will I be assessed?

The course is continuously assessed, there will be a little bit of homework and preparation for the following week and there will be a certificate at the end to show completion.

How will the course be delivered?

There will be a range of practical activities, tutor explanations and hands on workshops delivered through a workbook which can then be used for GCSE Maths and Biology.  You will also have access to Mathswatch which is the program used for maths assessments in college.

What next?

You can progess to GCSE Biology, GCSE Maths, Level 2 preparationf for further study in Heath, social care and social work and all access to HE courses.
