This course offers an exciting alternative to anyone interested in studying science but struggles with exams. The course will develop your understanding of science, giving you an insight into the practical applications of science in the workplace. It will cover aspects of the three main sciences but focuses mainly on biology and chemistry.

What will I study?

National Certificate, 36 Weeks, 1 day per week

There are 2 units in this course

  • Principles and Applications of Science 1
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

The following topics are covered:

  • Fundamentals of science
  • Working in the science industry
  • Scientific investigations
  • Chemical laboratory techniques

How will I be assessed?

Unit 01 assessed externally by Pearson BTEC and Unit 02 assessed by practical coursework which is internally marked and externally moderated.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs grade A*-C/ 4 - 9 including one science subject.

What next?

This course can lead to BTEC Diploma in Applied science or to a science related job or a higher education (degree-level) course in biological sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, chemical analysis, engineering, meteorology, science journalism, analytical chemistry, biomedical sciences, or dietetics.

It will also provide initial qualifications for vocational routes such as level 3 technicians which is a high demand skilled profession across the country.
