Navigation Skills for Outdoor Pursuits (Course Code K0516GXPEA)

This is an introductory 5-week course (2 hours a session) which will introduce you to some basic navigation skills.

This course will be delivered at the Beverley campus unless covid restrictions change then it will be online.

For this, learners will need a device such as a laptop or PC or phone/iPad and a internet connection to take part.  Ideally, devices will also have webcams for full participation.  Learners will need to download the Teams app onto their laptop/PC or mobile phone/other device and devices will need to have a camera so that they can participate.

Provided the current government guidelines for groups meeting outdoors remain in place, there will some sessions held on Beverley Westwood - map orientation/identifying features/using a compass - weather permitting.


What will I study?

  • An introduction to Map reading (OS 1:25,000) including:

Map skills - recognising features, map orientation, scales, measuring distances, and 6 figure grid referencing.

  • Compass skills
  • Planning a route (route cards, suitable clothing and equipment needed)
