Pre-Service Certificate in Education (Lifelong Learning)

The pre-service programme is designed for those who are not currently teaching but are suitably qualified and who would
like to work in the lifelong learning sector. The sector includes further, higher and adult education, community and youth
services, the health services, uniformed services (the armed forces, prison, the police and fire services), and private trainers
and large organisations with their own training departments. It also includes provision for teaching 14 to 16-year-olds in some subjects. Successful candidates may apply for status as Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS). Recent changes to legislation now enable some holders of QTLS to teach in schools. This is a full-time course, normally completed in one year. Students will spend two days per week with other trainee teachers, following a course of academic study on principles of teaching and learning. Up to three days per week will be spent in a placement within their specialist area working with a range of students and building skills and confidence as a teacher.

What will I study?

The programme is run in partnership with the University of Hull leading to a Certificate in education.

The modules studied cover all the fundamental skills of teaching, facilitation of learning and curriculum development.

  • Principles and practice in post compulsory education
  • Practical teaching and learning
  • Exploring subject specialist teaching
  • Advanced professional practice in context

The College will aim to organise for you a suitable work placement in the local area. You will need to record a minimum of 100 hours of teaching.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment includes written work, posters, presentations and personal development portfolios. You will be regularly
observed teaching and this is an essential element in the assessment process.

How will the course be delivered?

The programme includes taught sessions, tutorials, teaching practice experience, visiting speakers, seminars, and a
conference at the University of Hull.

All programmes are led and taught by experienced teaching staff who are vocational specialists.  They are qualified, and often have extensive experience within the industry or the sector being studied. All teaching staff meet or exceed the requirements set by the awarding institute or body.  

Staff profile: Jane Chadwick

Jane has an MA in Professional Development in Education and Training and 35 years’ experience teaching in different settings and at all levels from Entry level to level 7.  Her research interests are embedding English and maths in the curriculum and mentoring.

Entry requirements

  • A qualification at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level three or above in the area that you teach (for example, A-Levels, HNC, HND, CGLI advanced, NVQ level three/four)

and

  • You will complete a placement and record a minimum of 100 hours of teaching
  • College interview

 

A typical offer for this course would ask for the entry requirements to be met, however, all offers take individual applicants’ experience and qualifications into account. 

What next?

On successful completion of the full course you will be awarded a Certificate in Education. As a qualified teacher there are opportunities for teaching your subject area in a wide range of settings nationwide. Credit points for each module may be used in the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme to progress to higher level courses such as our BA in Education and Professional Development.

Alternative routes to qualification are via our part-time certificate in education PGCE or the Level Three Award in
Education and Training.
