College Twins Cook up a Success

Michele and Matthew from the Westwood in Beverley

The Westwood is a stylish, contemporary restaurant, serving magnificent food and adding to the ever expanding list of high quality restaurants in Beverley. Owners of The Westwood, twins Michele and Matthew Barker have received rave reviews in the press.

East Riding College (formerly Beverley College) are delighted for Michele and Matthew, especially as they took their first steps on the ladder with the College. Both Michele and Matthew studied on the BTEC National Diploma in Hotel, Catering & Institutional Operations at what was then Beverley College. They progressed onto The Birmingham College of Food, both completing courses at Degree level.

Michele's goal was to travel to as many places as possible, choosing the coolest restaurants to work in along the way, she was always interested in restaurants and not hotels or any other part of the industry. She would look through food guides and magazines to see which Chef was making a splash in which country then head out there. Most of Michele?s career has been as a service director for such greats as Alain Ducasse and most recently for the past 3 years for Jean-George Vongerichton in New York.

Matthew worked his way around the world in a similar way, with a spell in Canada as a Chef de Partie, then Head chef at Rockingham Arms, from there he spent two years as Food & Beverage Manager for P&O Cruises followed by a position with Virgin Atlantic and most recently he worked for Brakes Foods.

Michele and Matthew decided that Beverley was the ideal location to open their restaurant, ironically only a short distance from the College where they started their journey.

Michele and Matthew are eager to share their skills and knowledge and have employed 2 existing College students, Rob Malison and Richard Jude providing employment and great training opportunities at ?The Westwood?.

Michele said ?After leaving school neither of us were sure of our direction but as soon as we started at East Riding College, we both started to enjoy education a little more and it and allowed us both to think so much bigger about our lives. Realising our dream of opening a restaurant would not have happened if we had not started our careers at East Riding College?

East Riding College wish Michele and Matthew every success with ?The Westwood.?
