Brickwork Taster Day for Women and Girls

5th June 2008 5:11pm - Return to press releases

East Riding College is to hold a free brickwork taster day for women and girls at its site in Lancaster Road, Carnaby, on Wednesday, June 25, from 10am to 3.30pm.

The day will be an opportunity to find out more about working in the building trade and the construction courses provided by the College.
It will begin in the classroom with an introduction into health and safety, followed by an opportunity to build a brick and block wall in the workshop.

Everyone who attends will receive a certificate saying they have taken part in the workshop.

Construction lecturer Richard Perkins said: ?The stereotypes are slowly breaking down in society so you see people in jobs traditionally performed by the opposite sex but there is still a belief among many people that construction is a man's job.

"At East Riding College, we?re keen to help women and girls to overcome these barriers and there is also a push from the government to promote women in construction.

"This brickwork taster day for women is an ideal opportunity for them to find out more about the trade and to have a go in a relaxed atmosphere."

Anyone attending the event will need to wear safety footwear.
