David and Shirley web.jpgEast Riding College lecturers Shirley Hebden and David Bernasconi have been highly commended in the latest City and Guilds Medals for Excellence awards.
The judges said Skills for Life lecturer Shirley and David, who teaches English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), only narrowly missed out on winning medals.
The Medals for Excellence programme recognises and rewards exceptional people whose work makes them stand out.
Helen Kitson, head of curriculum area for Key and Basic Skills, said: "I'd like to congratulate Shirley and David on these commendations.
"They are both outstanding teachers, innovative and motivational, and fully deserve this recognition."

Shirley was nominated on the strength of her students' achievements, her enthusiasm for her subject and the work she did as project manager for the East Riding Basic Skills Resource Centre.
She said: "I was really happy to be highly commended but also it was nice that my manager thought it was worth nominating me for my achievements.
"I really enjoy going out into the workplace and working with difficult to reach learners and doing staff training. It's a surprise to get recognition just for doing something I enjoy."

David was nominated because of his teaching skills, the quality of assessments and external verification of his work, and the way he champions learning.
He said: "It's a great feeling to be recognised by the Medals for Excellence scheme. I was surprised just to be nominated, never mind highly commended.
"I'd like to thank all the colleagues and students who make teaching ESOL at East Riding College so enjoyable."
