Skills on show in hairdressing contest

5th February 2009 10:11am - Return to press releases

Talented hairdressing students from East Riding College went head to head in their annual competition this week.
More than 40 students in total took part in contests held at the campuses in Gallows Lane, Beverley, and St Mary's Walk, Bridlington on Tuesday.
The three categories tested their abilities in commercial blow drying, their imagination with "avant garde" styling and their skills in bridal put-ups.
In the Beverley competition, the judges were salon owners Mel Dudley and Keeley Penn, and Sue Robson, the College's head of curriculum for Leisure and Hospitality. The winners were:

  • Blow drying - Katrina Broadwell
  • Avant garde - Marie Braim
  • Beautiful bride - Naomi Kinniard

In the Bridlington contest, the judges were salon owners Paula Smith and Kerry Meunier, and Bridlington Mayoress Michelle Daltry. It was the final hair and beauty event to be held in the College's current Bridlington campus before the opening of the new £17m building, which is being constructed next to the existing college. The winners were:

  • Blow drying - Amy Brown
  • Avant garde - Natalie Baines
  • Beautiful bride - Kim Selby

Natalee Eddom, head of curriculum for Hair and Beauty, said: "The standard of work on show last night was incredibly high and I'd like to congratulate all the students who took part on their fantastic efforts.
"Our winners showed that they are very capable of working in the hairdressing industry and they came up with some really creative styles. It was also good to see our beauty therapists helping with the application of make up."
