Pupils get a taste of working in a kitchen

6th March 2009 3:13pm - Return to press releases

Children from Bay Primary School got a taste of working in a restaurant kitchen when they joined forces with East Riding College students to prepare food for an open event.
The 12 youngsters, aged 10 and 11, spent a morning with four college students to produce a buffet for senior citizens living near the school.
The students, who are studying on catering and hospitality courses, helped the primary school pupils to prepare cakes, nibbles and sandwiches.
The food was taken back to the school for the annual Bay Primary School Gala which was attended by senior citizens from the local community and nearby residential homes.

Catering lecturer Les Cage, who supervised the session, said: "The pupils were really interested in learning about making food and learnt really quickly.
"They were a joy to have in the kitchen and they produced some lovely food, and our students did a great job in helping them with their creations."

Emma Joyce, East Riding of Yorkshire Council's extended schools co-ordinator covering Bridlington, said: "It is always a pleasure to work with the College and their support has been amazing.
"The children benefit greatly not only through the skills they learn but also by having the opportunity to give something back to their local community through hosting the gala event".
