Jazz up your summer
6th April 2009 10:39am - Return to press releases
Jazz musicians can hone their skills at a special summer school organised by East Riding College in August.
The three-day event will be held at the College's site in St James Street, Hull, and has been organised as part of the Hull International Jazz Festival, which will run from August 24 to August 30.
Led by international jazz performer and East Riding College lecturer Martin Jones, it will include instrumental tuition, band rehearsal skills, jazz composition and arranging and contextualising jazz.
The course will also feature a masterclass from one of the jazz festival's top acts and at least one performance for all summer school participants at the Hull Truck Theatre in front of and as part of the Hull International Jazz Festival.
Martin said: "This gives the many jazz musicians out there a rare chance to not only benefit from tuition from some of the top jazz musicians and educators in the country, but also the opportunity to perform at the new Hull Truck Theatre in a performance which is a key part of the festival. East Riding College takes its role in the community very seriously and is delighted to offer this at such a reasonable price."
As well as being a stand-alone event, the summer school is an opportunity for people considering enrolling on the College's new full-time jazz diploma course to find out more.
The course, which will also be held at the College's Hull site, is based as a jazz pathway in the level three Performing Musician course developed by the awarding body Access to Music.
It teaches students, instrumental skills, musicianship, music rehearsal skills, contextualising jazz, developing a jazz career, composing and arranging and live music performance.
The jazz summer school will be held from August 25 to 27, from 9.30am to 4.30pm. The cost is £50 full price or £25 for concessions (unwaged) For more information or to reserve a place, call Martin Jones at the college on 01482 382506 or simply email him on [email protected]
