Students send Christmas gifts to eastern Europe

Travel and tourism learners from East Riding College are to send 40 shoe boxes filled with gifts to poor families in eastern Europe as part of their studies.
The students, studying at the College's campus in St Mary's Walk, Bridlington, have spent six weeks developing fundraising ideas and preparing to implement them.
They had a cake stall, guess the name of the bear (a student dressed up in a bear costume), a sponsored silence, a trick or treat game and Hallowe'en fancy dress.
They raised £140, which will go towards the items and postage for the shoe boxes as part of the Link Romania Family Shoebox Appeal.
Items in the boxes include things like toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, colouring books, teddies, sweets, pens, calculators, socks and gloves.

Christian Tate, 18, from Flamborough, said: "We have learn a lot about the kind of living conditions some people face in poorer countries, even as near as eastern Europe.
"We're all really happy to have raised this much money which will hopefully brighten up Christmas a little bit for families in Romania and other eastern European countries."

Tutor Teresa Colman said: "The students did a great job of thinking up ways of raising money and then putting them into practice during a day of fundraising.
"Learning about life in other countries is an important part of the curriculum in travel and tourism, and this project has developed their understanding of the difficulties faced by people who can't afford to buy food, never mind Christmas presents."
