Students use latest in sports technologyStudents at East Riding College have been using the latest technology to brush up on their golf swings as part of their sports studies.
The learners, studying towards a BTEC Level Three Extended Diploma in Sport, used an iPad app to study their technique with Daniel Connell, the club pro at Bridlington Links Golf Club.
They then went on to have a nine-hole pairs competition, which was organised by Bethan Atkinson as part of a unit on organising sports events. Pictured are Bethan Atkinson (holding golf club) and Jessica Woodley

Tutor Alex Bell said: “Technology is becoming increasingly important in modern sport and this was an excellent opportunity for students to see how it can enhance their golf technique.
“It’s an essential part of our job to ensure that students are working with the kind of equipment that is used by professional trainers, conditioning experts and others in the sport and leisure industry.
“Not only that, the tournament was a great way to have a bit of competitive fun.”

The tournament was the culmination of a four-week unit looking at individual sports, which was initially made up of sessions on indoor sports such as badminton, table tennis, snooker and squash.
Strong ties with Bridlington Links Golf Club enabled the College to hold four sessions there, with the first three based on the skills and techniques of different types of shots.
The learners have had coaching from Mr Connell, and also had the opportunity to use the software Swing Reader on the iPads.
This has allowed them to video each other while on the driving range and be able to analyse instantly their own performance with the help of Mr Connell.
Learners will now go to Bridlington/Milau Petanque Club in Bridlington for four weeks, followed by four weeks at Bridlington Tennis Club.

Student John Major, 18, from Flamborough, said: “The past four weeks have been a great experience for us. We all love playing sport but we’re also learning about the science and techniques behind the various sports, which are essential for successful careers in the sport and leisure industry.”

East Riding College runs a range of full and part-time sport and recreation courses from level one to level three (A-level equivalent) and higher level, including a one-year “top-up” degree that will run for the first time in September.
