College teams up with employers in new training programme

A new training programme which aims to give young people a helping hand into work or an apprenticeship is being launched by East Riding College this week.
Traineeships are being rolled out nationally to help young people gain work experience and improve their essential skills so they can make their first steps on the career ladder.
The College has teamed up with local and national employers to organise work experience placements which are key to the success of the Traineeships.
The courses are aimed at people aged 16 to 23 who are keen to work as soon as possible and include help with interview techniques and CV writing.
Principal Derek Branton said: “Traineeships are for young people who are in the ‘catch 22’ situation of really wanting to work but not having the work experience needed to make their job application stand out.
“By providing the placements and developing learners’ English, maths and other employability skills, Traineeships aim to give people the boost they need to strengthen their CV and secure their first job or apprenticeship.”
Traineeships typically last 20 weeks or less and are structured around work experience, with attendance at the College helping with preparation for job interviews and writing a CV, improving essential English and maths skills, and tasters in a particular vocational area.
The College has teamed up with local and national organisations and companies to provide work placements. These include catering placements with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, retail placements with Sewell Group and Proudfoots, and hair and beauty placements at salons across the East Riding.
Placements will soon be available in construction, food manufacturing, health and social care, and social marketing,
Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economy, investment and inequalities at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Ensuring our young people have the relevant skills to compete in today’s jobs market is a top priority for this council.
“I am delighted that students from East Riding College will undertake placements within our catering service which will help them gain first-hand experience and put what they have learned into practice.”
