Apprentice wins award for second year in a row

An East Riding College student has won a regional apprentice award from the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) for the second year in a row.
James Paton, 21, from SHAW Motor Vehicle Engineers of Driffield, won the overall apprentice of the year award in the IMI's Hull and District Member Association Apprentice Awards.
James was nominated by his tutor and assessor at East Riding College, Glenn Jensen, for his work ethic and top notch practical skills.

James said: “I’ve always enjoyed coming to college and have learnt a lot since starting the apprenticeship.
“The knowledge and experience I have gained from both my work colleagues and my tutor have enabled me to progress within the industry to where I am today.”

His tutor at the College, Glenn Jensen, said: “James has worked really hard during his time with the College, over the course of an intermediate and an advanced apprenticeship, both of which he has now completed.
“He has shown excellent knowledge of motor vehicle engineering, he is really good practically and he was committed to improving his English and maths, which are skills employers expect today, even in practical roles.
“His employer is very also happy with him, which is obviously something we want for every apprentice.”

James’ employer, Simon Hullah, said: “James has worked really hard for this award. He’s a good lad and he thoroughly deserves it.
“He was interested in the car side of things from the start of his apprenticeship. We put him with one of the experienced workers and, alongside the work he has done at college, this has helped him to develop really well.”

Apprenticeships are an increasingly popular way of improving the skills and knowledge of employees and are being promoted by the government as one of the ways to achieve the skill levels needed so the UK economy can grow stronger.
They typically involve the employee spending four days a week at work, developing their practical skills, and one day a week at college, learning the accompanying theory.
They are available at levels two, three and four which are the equivalents to GCSEs, A-levels and the first year of a degree, respectively, and in the full range of subject areas.
