Childcare students shine in primary PE classes

Childcare students from East Riding College have been putting primary school pupils through their paces in special sports sessions.
The learners, who study at the campus in St Mary’s Walk, Bridlington, have been delivering PE lessons to the year two children at nearby Bay Primary School.
They are putting into practice skills and knowledge they have developed as part of a sports leadership course they have undertaken in addition to their main course.
All of the students are working towards a Level Three BTEC Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development.

Charlie Vickers, 18, from Bridlington, said: “It’s been great fun leading the sports sessions with the children from Bay Primary School and they’ve been a joy to work with.
“I think all the students have learnt a lot from these lessons and we look forward to putting what we’ve learnt into practice in future.”

Bay Primary teacher Martin Shepherd said: "The students have been helping year two pupils develop not only in sport and PE but in their social and communication skills.
“The girls are doing an excellent job and the pupils are really enjoying the lessons and skills they are working on.”
He added: "As a school we encourage pupils to have the opportunity to develop using the skills of those in our community.
“The College is a fantastic partner for us to have as a school and we aim to progress and work together for a long time."

The link-up with the primary school has seen 18 college students delivering 16 sessions over eight weeks.
The sessions have involved a wide range of sports and activities including football, tennis, netball and orienteering, with students using the skills and techniques they learned on the sports leadership course.

Matt Jeffery, the College’s sports maker, said: “This experience is perfect for those who wish to pursue a career in teaching as it really does add another string to their bow.
“The learners are doing a brilliant job and the children from Bay Primary School are really enjoying the sessions.”
