Outstanding opportunities with leading Hull firm

Budding civil engineers are being offered the opportunity to work for one of the region’s premier firms in a new apprenticeship scheme.
East Riding College and Spencer Group have teamed up to enable 20 people to learn essential skills required by the company in a free pre-apprenticeship programme.
The 10-week course is the students’ chance to shine before five apprentices are selected to undertake a two-year apprenticeship from September.
Successful apprentices are guaranteed a full-time job on completion of it and progression to an advanced apprenticeship, as well as the potential for support up to higher national diploma or higher apprenticeship level.

Aaron McIver, Spencer Group training manager, said: “We pride ourselves on developing our own talent from the local area and this apprenticeship scheme will enable us to do just that.
“Construction is a hugely important sector in the Humber region and highly skilled and knowledgeable people are essential to our continued success.”

Alex Sheldon, head of construction at the College, said: “This scheme is an outstanding opportunity to work for one of the region’s leading companies on some major infrastructure projects.
“We are looking to recruit a select group of learners to learn civil engineering essentials, with the brightest of these going onto a full apprenticeship and a great future.”

Hull-based Spencer Group is one of the UK’s largest privately owned multi-disciplinary engineering businesses.
The company has delivered major projects, including terminals on Hull docks, a biomass facility at Drax power station, and bridge dehumidification across the UK and Europe.
It will be heavily involved in the delivery of the pre-apprenticeship programme, which will be delivered in Bridlington, ensuring that learners receive the training that is specifically required by Spencer Group.
Those accepted onto the pre-apprenticeship will be given an introduction to the construction industry and health and safety, before covering topics such as drainage, using concrete, laying paving and brick walling.

To apply for the pre-apprenticeship, call East Riding College on 0345 120 0044.
