Students put on Pop-Up Fashion Show

East Riding College fashion students teamed up with top fashion outlets to put on a pop-up summer fashion show last weekend.  Students worked alongside the stores at the Flemingate shopping centre to select outfits to showcase the retailer’s summer collections.  Debenhams, Outfit, River Island, Peacocks and Top Shop all got involved and gave students free reign to put together catwalk looks that were modelled in the show on Saturday.

Student Jasmine McCann, aged 17 from Bridlington said, “It’s been a really useful experience, learning how to run a show.  Not many colleges have access to this kind of facility on their doorstep, and the cooperation of the stores to do the show.”

Fashion student Elland Hill, aged 16, also from Bridlington added, “We spoke to the managers and selected the outfits.  We tried to do a range of looks to show off their garments, including smart casual and different styles for young and old, as well as for the festival season.”

A selection of the students’ own work is also adorning the window display opposite the new Creative Lab at the Flemingate Shopping Centre. This includes a striking jacket designed by Kaine Ennis, aged 19, from Bridlington, which he designed inspired by a visit to the Dr Gunther von Hagen exhibit Animals Inside Out at the Life Science Centre in Newcastle.

Working with felt to create a 3D effect, Kaine used the textures of the tissues and veins he observed at the gruesome exhibition to inspire his piece. Kaine said, “I like the idea of working with scraps of fabric and taking raw materials and turning it into something else.”

East Riding College’s Art, Design and Fashion end of year show will go on display at the new Bridlington Contemporary Gallery between 17-20 June.
