Students use latest in sports technology

Students at East Riding College have been using the latest technology to brush up on their golf swings as part of their sports studies.
The learners, studying towards a BTEC Level Three Extended Diploma in Sport, used an iPad app to study their technique with Daniel Connell, the club pro at Bridlington Links Golf Club.

Students at East Riding College have been learning about the benefits of volunteering at events this week.
Volunteer fairs have been held at the Beverley and Bridlington campuses, with a range of organisations attending to highlight opportunities to learners.

IT students build church website

IT students at East Riding College have built a website for a Bridlington church as part of an ongoing link with the organisation.
Daniel Hobson, 18, from Filey, and Elliot Sowersby, 19, from Bridlington, worked with St John’s Burlington Methodist Church to create the site, including a system which allows church members to manage the site themselves.

See College in action at open events

East Riding College is opening its doors to residents and prospective students next month with a range of activities taking place during its latest open events.
The Beverley and Bridlington campuses will be alive with students and staff, with a number of classes taking place and students working in areas such as the hair and beauty salons, kitchens and construction and engineering workshops.

College hosts Five-4-All tournament

East Riding College has hosted a five-a-side football tournament for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.
The Five-4-All tournament brought together six teams from the College’s Beverley and Bridlington campuses, Grimsby Institute, Barnsley College and Franklin College, Grimsby.

College wins top "green" award

East Riding College has become the first college in the country to be awarded the highest level of accreditation from a new environmental scheme, only six months after joining.
The College earned the ‘Green Award’ from Investors in the Environment after staff worked hard to meet a range of criteria and showed a continual reduction in environmental impact.

Engineering student solves bell ringers' problem

An East Riding College student has come to the aid of a group of bell-ringers in an unlikely engineering project.
Danny Coupland, 18, from Beverley was commissioned to create a bespoke pulley mechanism to prevent the ropes from cutting through the floor of St Michael’s Church in the village of St Michaels, just outside St Albans, Hertfordshire.

Outstanding students celebrated at awards ceremony

Outstanding student achievements were recognised last night at East Riding College's annual awards ceremony.
The event saw 20 students each presented with a glass trophy and a gift voucher at the ceremony at the Gallows Lane campus in Beverley.

Catering and hospitality students at East Riding College have met the former head chef of the Ritz Hotel in London, Michael Quinn MBE.

AS-Level students' enterprising success

AS English Language and Literature students have been busy baking their way to the theatre. In order to fund a visit to Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, they held a cake stall and tombola at the college.
The students would like to thank staff, family and friends for their contributions to tombola prizes and baking which have helped make the event a success.

Students from East Riding College took part in a range of cultural and religious activities as part of their Equality and Diversity Week.  
Activities were held throughout the week at both the Gallows Lane campus in Beverley and in St Mary’s Walk, Bridlington.

Students open salon thanks to enterprising advice

Two beauty therapy students from East Riding College have taken the plunge by opening a salon while still studying.
Jen Middleton, 34, and Emmie Prince, 21, both from Bridlington, have opened Essential Beauty in a unit at Applegarth Court, an extra care housing facility in Applegarth Lane in the town. It serves residents of the complex and the general public.

A new sports initiative at East Riding College is aiming to get all students taking part in a minimum of 30 minutes physical activity every week.
The College has appointed a new “sport maker”, Matt Jeffery, to increase the range of activities on offer.

Minister for Skills visits East Riding College

The Minster for Skills, Matthew Hancock MP, visited East Riding College in Beverley today to discuss key issues in further education.
Mr Hancock, along with Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart and officials from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, was given a tour of the Gallows Lane campus before meeting with senior managers from the College.

Children in Need events raise £600

Students from East Riding College raised nearly £600 through a variety of activities for Children in Need.
Activities included tombolas, fancy dress, having your picture taken with a parrot, leg waxing and cake stalls, raising almost £400.

Students and families celebrate higher achievements

Graduates and their families packed the Priory Church of St Mary in Bridlington to celebrate the achievements of higher education students from East Riding College.
The church was full with about 400 people attending the event, which saw students presented with scrolls by Principal Derek Branton in recognition of the successful completion of their course.

Best HE student satisfaction results in Humber region

East Riding College has been named the higher education provider with the best student satisfaction ratings in the Humber region.
Some 90 per cent of the College’s students said they were satisfied with the overall quality of their course, up from 87 per cent in 2011 and compared to the average score for colleges of 81 per cent and 85 per cent for all institutions.

Performing arts students learn from rising star

Performing arts students from East Riding College were treated to an acting workshop by Hull-born rising star David Tute.
David, 23, from Hull, who recently landed the leading role in a London show, led a practical session for learners on the BTEC Level Three Diploma in Performing Arts at Collette Tyler’s School of Dance in Bridlington.

Eighth successive increase in enrolments

East Riding College is celebrating its eighth consecutive increase in the number of 16 to 18-year-old students enrolled on full-time courses.
With more than 1,150 now enrolled, the College is expecting to beat the growth targets set for this year, despite a significant reduction in the number of 16-year-olds leaving school in the summer.

At the age of 60, Valeriano Doncel has proven that apprenticeships are not just for young people.
After more than 40 years working as a chef in kitchens in Spain and England, the Humber NHS Foundation Trust employee has shown that the training courses are ideal for people of all ages.

Time to enrol on part-time courses

East Riding College has now published details of its drop-in enrolment dates for part-time courses starting from September.
The sessions, at the end of August and beginning of September, enable prospective students to talk to tutors and guidance officers, enrol and be interviewed, if necessary, on the day.

Students take part in environmental projects

A group of students from East Riding College have been helping to improve the local environment in Bridlington as part of their engineering course.
The eight learners, who are working towards their Level One Diploma in Motor Cycle Maintenance, organised a litter pick and planted a tree as part of their “Personal and Social Development”, an addition to their main course which covers the more general skills that employers look for.

Michael wins regional award

An adult learner from East Riding College has won an award in recognition of the progress he has made during his studies.
Michael Norfolk, 53, from Hull, became the Open College Network (OCN) Learner Journey Award Winner as part of this year’s Adult Learners’ Week Awards.
