Portland Grain Limited is based at Barmby Moor, York, and has provision for up to 40,000 tonnes of cereal and food/ feed crops. The facility offers storage for wheat, barley, oil seeds, and pulses in flat stores or silos, and container loading of bulk products via weighbridge.

All grain is handled, stored, and monitored in accordance with the Trade Assurance Scheme for Combinable Crops (TASCC). We have a fully equipped TASCC approved laboratory for the testing and analysis of products, storage, and supply. This approval provides confidence that grain integrity is protected throughout storage, from intake to out loading. Work

As an apprentice, you will combine practical, hands-on experience within the workplace with structured training. You will work closely alongside experienced professionals, developing valuable skills, knowledge, and confidence to support your long-term career development.

What you’ll do at work

  • Follow all food hygiene and health & safety procedures.
  • Help with stock rotation, labelling, and proper food storage.
  • Support with deliveries, checking quality, storing goods, and minimising waste.
  • Assist with preparing fresh ingredients for our café menu, including breakfasts, lunches, soups, sandwiches, paninis, traybakes, and children’s meals.
  • Contribute to the preparation of homemade dishes and daily specials.
  • Work efficiently during busy service periods while maintaining high food quality.
  • Support chefs in cooking and plating dishes.
  • Learn to manage different kitchen sections (prep, breakfast, hot food, salads, desserts, etc.).
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work area at all times.
  • Participate in menu development, seasonal ideas, and tasting sessions where required.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you will gain hands-on experience preparing ingredients, cooking dishes, and supporting service across multiple sections. You will learn how to work efficiently, safely, and hygienically while contributing to the overall success of the kitchen team.

As a central point of coordination, you will:

  • Support the Contract Management and Site Trade teams to deliver excellent, timely services to our customers
  • Work closely with operational teams to schedule site activities and ensure project information, materials, and logistics are in place
  • Communicate regularly with customers to support project progress and maintain high satisfaction levels
  • Assist Contract Managers with project planning and variation development, including researching and ordering material requirements
  • Keep project files and documentation accurate, organised, and up to date
  • Act as a focal point for customer and site team calls and emails, ensuring queries are handled efficiently and resolved promptly
  • Help keep workflows updated, progressing active works and saving critical documentation to job folders
  • Support the preparation of key client reports and final accounts
  • Request payment of excesses (where applicable) and follow up on outstanding material choices
  • Agree material selections within approved client allowances, source cost-effective materials, and arrange delivery to site
  • Contribute to a culture of excellence, effective customer service, and continuous improvement
