Financial Support – Including help with Travel costs.

Welcome to Learner Finance

We understand some of our learners will need financial help during their studies and depending on their situation there is help available.

Financial support through various bursary funds can offer financial assistance to students who are in full or part-time further education and are encountering financial barriers to learning. The bursaries are funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency and through East Riding College funds.

Funding is limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis and according to actual financial need. It is not guaranteed.

A number of courses are not eligible for additional financial help through the Bursary Fund. This includes “full cost” courses, apprenticeships and higher education courses. Please check with Guidance Services if you are unsure about your course or need advice about alternative funding.

 

Help includes assistance with Travel costs, Childcare, Equipment, Uniforms, Meals and other items depending on your course, age and circumstances. For 16-18 year olds free travel is available if you live more than two miles away from the nearest College site that delivers your course.

You may be eligible for financial support if:

  • You are aged 16-18 on 31st August 2023 and enrolled on an eligible full time course or
  • You are aged 19+ on 31st August 2023, continuing on a course you began aged 16-18 or you have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or
  • You are in care, a care leaver, receive Universal Credit because you financially support yourself or receive DLA/PIP and Universal Credit or
  • You are aged 19+ on 31st August 2023 and enrolled on an eligible full time course (apprenticeships, Higher Education, non-funded courses are not eligible) or
  • You are enrolled on an eligible full time course and in receipt of an Advanced Learner Loan.

 

Please read through the attached Terms and Conditions of Support and Guidance Notes, which has the income criteria, indicates the help available and how to apply. This includes applying for help with Travel.

Please note for TRANSPORT costs if you are under 19 on the 31st August 2023, or have an EHCP, or are continuing on a course you began when you were under 19 then there is NO income criteria, subject to certain conditions.

Tuition Fee Waivers

If you receive Jobseeker's Allowance, Employment Support Allowance (Work related Activity Group) or Universal Credit (Mandated) you are likely to be entitled to tuition fee remission.

If you receive any state benefit other than the above you may be entitled to tuition fee remission if the course you are enrolling on is intended to help you obtain employment.

Adult learners aged 19 to 23 (on the course start date), who do not hold a full level two qualification (eg five GCSEs A to C, NVQ level two, BTEC first diploma) will not be charged tuition fees if they are studying either a full level two qualification or, if they require an additional step to get to level two, at entry level or level one

OR

If they are studying for their first full level three qualification they are also eligible to claim 100 per cent tuition fee remission if studying for their first full level three qualification.

Adult learners (19+) who earn less than £17,374.50 annual gross salary may also be eligible for fee exemption.

For some courses, other fees must be paid e.g. examination fees or material costs.

Advanced Learner Loans for courses at level three and above

Tuition fee loans are available to anybody aged 19 and over studying further education courses at level 3 or above. Read on the advanced learner loans page or download the 19+ Advanced Learner loans Leaflet.

Students in receipt of Advanced Learner Loans can also apply for a bursary for support with other costs associated with studying. Download the Financial Assistance Application Form.

Apprenticeship Bursary opportunities 

If you are aged between 16-24 years old and a care-leaver and are starting your first apprenticeship, you may be entitled to a £1000 bursary in the first year.
