What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship combines employment with industry-standard training. It aims to provide entry into a recognised occupation, encompassing a comprehensive blend of on-the-job and off-the-job training. The apprentice’s occupational competence is evaluated through an independent, end-point assessment.

Apprenticeships are employer led. Employers set the standards, generate demand for apprentices to fulfill their skill requirements, finance the apprenticeship, and oversee the employment and training of the apprentice. However, the apprentice’s requirements are equally significant: attaining proficiency in a skilled occupation that is transferable, ensuring long-term earning prospects, enhanced job security, and the ability to advance in the workplace.

The Occupation and Standard

An apprenticeship should provide entry to a recognised occupation which can be transferred to other relevant employers and is sufficiently skilled to require employment and training of a minimum duration of one year, with 20% of the time allocated to off-the-job training.

A written standard, which fully defines the occupation in terms of the responsibilities and tasks involved and the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to achieve competence, must be approved.

Apprenticeship Levy

Our page on the Apprenticeship Levy aims to provide comprehensive information to help you grasp the implications of the levy on your business. We offer guidance on ensuring that your employees possess the necessary skill sets to enhance your business’s success.

The Apprenticeship Levy was launched in April 2017 to encourage employers to use apprenticeship programmes, either for new staff or to upskill an existing workforce, and help reduce the skills gap within the UK’s workforce. The Apprenticeship Levy is applied to all industries in the UK.
